I have had asthma all my life, too. Even though I also live in Cleveland, Ohio, as Eric does in one of your stories, my asthma is under fairly good control now. I was hospitalized for 4 days this winter and had two trips to the emergency room, but this was the first time in many years.
There are only a few smoke stacks dotting Cleveland now--so much better than when we were children. There is nothing we can do about the weather except move, but Eric (probably) and I can't afford it. I am concerned about Eric. He should not be relying on his inhalers when there is better preventative care now and help for costs of our VERY expensive asthma medications. Cleveland is also a great place to get expert medical care.
