Stefano Guerra, MD, PhD, MPH

Dr. Stefano Guerra is a professor of Medicine & Public Health, the Henry E. Dahlberg Endowed Chair in Pulmonary Medicine, and the Director of the Population Science Unit at the Asthma and Airway Disease Research Center, University of Arizona. He has had more than 15 years of continuous funding from the National Institutes of Health for his work on asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Dr. Guerra received his medical degree from the University of Milan, Italy, where he also completed his training as an adult pulmonologist. After moving to Tucson in 1999, he received his Master of Public Health and his PhD in Epidemiology with minor in Genetics from the University of Arizona.

Dr. Guerra is a leading expert in the natural history of obstructive lung diseases, the early roots of COPD, and the use of biomarkers and genomic tools to identify the molecular components of asthma and COPD. As principal investigator of multiple studies that used bio-specimens and phenotypic information from epidemiological cohorts, he has been engaged in the leadership of large scale biomarker studies for the last 20 years. He is currently the principal investigator of the Tucson Epidemiological Study of Airway Obstructive Disease and one of the co-PIs of the Tucson Children's Respiratory Study.
