The Electric School Bus Solution

Electrifying school buses means cleaner air for children. We’re urging Congress to invest $20 billion so school districts can make the switch from diesel to zero-emission electric power.

Update: The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, signed into law in November 2021, included new investments in electric school buses.

Most school buses on the road are powered by diesel. They carry millions of children to and from school every day. Diesel exhaust is toxic to the human body. Exposure can lead to serious health issues, and children’s developing lungs are especially sensitive to these effects. That’s why the American Lung Association is urging Congress to help our country make the transition to zero-emission school buses. A nationwide transition to electric vehicles, including school buses, would provide major public health and climate benefits.

School buses carry millions of children to and from school every day. Nationally, 95 percent of these buses are diesel-powered. There is clear scientific evidence demonstrating the effects of diesel exhaust exposure on the human body, including asthma attacks, premature deaths, and cancer. Children are especially vulnerable to poor air quality, as their brains and respiratory systems are still developing.

A $20 billion investment from the federal government will make it possible for local school districts to transition one-fifth of all diesel school buses to zero-emission electric power. That means healthier air for millions of kids.
